The Gardens lie in a valley and were developed in two phases during the 1770s and the 1820s. The larger of the two Gardens West Princes street Garden is situated in 29 acres of land and extends to St Johns and St Cuthbert’s Churches near Lothian road west. The other Garden East Princes street Garden covers 8.5 acres.

The gardens are situated in a valley that was once occupied by the North Loch a boggy depression that was drained in the early 19th century and are a popular choice with locals and visitors to the area which includes various facilities including play area with ramp access, cafe, kiosks, toilets and Seating. There is also a Bandstand which is host to various open air concerts and events.

While visiting take a look at the statues and monuments including the Scott Monument which dates back to 1844 to honour sir Walter Scott. There is also a floral clock situated in the eastern entrance to the gardens.
